💡SKILLS SPOTLIGHT
Building Your Personal Brand (Without Becoming an Influencer)

Let’s clear something up right away:

You do not need to be an influencer to build a personal brand!

You don’t need a huge following. You don’t need to go viral. And you definitely don’t need to dance on TikTok (unless that’s your thing).

But you do need people—colleagues, leaders, recruiters—to know what you do well and why it matters.

That’s what personal branding is really about: Visibility + Credibility = Opportunity.

And in STEM careers, where the default is often "let your work speak for itself," personal branding becomes your competitive edge.

Here are three ways to start building your personal brand right now:
1. Get clear on your message.
What do you want to be known for? Is it your problem-solving ability? Your leadership style? Your technical expertise? Start by identifying your value and then weave it into how you talk about yourself, online and off.

2. Optimize your LinkedIn headline and About section.
Your headline shouldn’t just be your job title. Use that space to communicate your value. Try this formula:

[What you do] + [Who you help or what impact you make] + [An impressive or unique element of your experience].
Example: Data Analyst | Helping biotech firms uncover insights through machine learning | 2x Innovation Award Winner

3. Show up and share.
You don’t need to post daily, but you do need to show up consistently. That could mean sharing an article you enjoyed, commenting thoughtfully on posts from others in your field, or writing a short post about a project you’re proud of.

The more people see you doing work aligned with your brand, the more they’ll associate you with that expertise.

This week, I want you to take one step forward:

Go to your LinkedIn profile and update your headline and About section with a more value-focused narrative.

If you need help crafting a strong headline or summary, reply to this email or DM me—I'm happy to help!

To your growth!
